Specialist, Environmental

 Key Accountabilities

  • Administers the SGL Technic LLC environmental and safety programs which includes but is not limited to conducting waste control and disposal, OSHA safety orientations for new employees, annual training of employees, safety sweeps, incident investigations, tier reporting, and advising safety committee in environmental or safety related issues.
  • Develops implements and maintains programs and policies for monitoring and preventing chemical, physical, and biological hazards at the facility and the community.
  • Surveys, compiles and analyzes data relating to occupational and environmental health issues such as chemical exposure, smoke, fumes, noise, temperature, dusts, vapors, mists, gases, solvents, lighting, and ergonomics which are known or suspected of being real or potential detriments to health
  • Performs safety measurements, safety evaluations, and waste evaluations.
  • Develops or provides input to hazardous material communications, including maintaining safety data sheets(SDS’s)
  • Provide assistance to Engineering, Production groups regarding chemical, environmental, industrial hygiene and safety issues of various projects
  • Complete required environmental, health and safety regulatory and reporting
  • Implements or recommends control measures for exposure to hazardous materials or conditions.
  • Provides technical guidance to management, government agencies, and civic groups regarding health-related problems and correct use of protective clothing or accessories
  • Monitors the company’s health and safety standards to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations including air/water pollution, waste disposal and chemical releases
  • Maintains working knowledge of new developments in related industry and government regulations
  • Develops and facilitates training for workers on issues related to heath, safety and the environment.
  • Conducts training of employees in environmental Health and Safety compliance, site inspections, sampling, log review, and report preparation to ensure compliance in the following:
  • Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Air Permit
  • Wastewater Permits
  • Storm Water Permits and Pollution Prevention(SWPP)
  • Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures(SPCC)
  • Hazardous Waste Management

 

Skills:

  • Oral communication- Speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; Listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; demonstrates group presentation skills.
  • Bilingual (Spanish & English) preferred.
  • Written Communication - Able to read and interpret information; writes clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; presents numerical data effectively;
  • Teamwork - Exhibits objectivity and openness to other’s views, gives and welcomes feedback; contributes to building a positive team spirit; able to build morale and group commitments to goals and objectives; supports everyone’s effort to succeed.

 

Experiences:

  • B.S. degree, Chemistry, Environmental Health and Safety degree from four-year college or university; 3-5 years Industrial experience ad or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiar with various CFAR, OSHA, SCAQMD, EPA and DTSC
  • Knowledge of internet software, Microsoft word and Excel
  • SAP experience a plus
  • Hazwoper certification/First Aid and CPR certification required

 

Work Environment:

This position works in both an office environment and a noisy plant environment.  The employee will regularly be working near moving mechanical parts and high temperature equipment and may on occasion be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, heat or dangerous chemicals.
