CVD Process Engineer, Applications & Technology

Position Summary: 

Position to focus on coatings applied to the surface of machined graphite parts but may also include carbon composite and/or other carbon-based materials.  Activities will include customer complaint resolution and technical support, product development and establishment of the "voice of customer" for production teams.  Involvement in areas other than coating will also be required to fully understand and complete overall job responsibilities (VOG, Graphitization, Machining, Quality/Inspection, etc.).


Key Accountabilities: 

  • Work with customers to understand their application performance requirements. 
  • Utilize knowledge of physics, chemistry and semiconductor processes to identify SGL product characteristics that affect customer performance using theory and analysis. 
  • Define and develop capability to meet customer quality and performance expectations. 
  • Develop and manage work package timelines and budgets to find product performance expectations. 
  • Develop and define process and procedures to establish or improve capable coating processes for existing and new product designs.
  • Support operation of the CVD department concerning process engineering activities i.e., work in response to specific quality issues or for process optimization such as reducing scrap/lowering costs. 
  • Provide technical analysis for customer complaint resolution:  analyzing returned parts, performing regressions against production data, generating reports and presenting to sales colleagues and customers. 
  • Support six-sigma and continuous development activities across the site. 
  • Interface with internal and external development partners, including suppliers, universities, customers and other SGL sites. 
  • Interface with other departments in St Marys to define and focus project activities. 
  • Periodic reporting of activities as requested. 


Your Profile: 

  • BS degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in either production or R&D environment
  • Prior experience with CVD/CVI processing
  • Prior experience with high temperature chemical processing equipment (>1000 C)
  • Experience in MOCVD, LED, Epitaxial processing preferred
  • Experience with graphite and general ceramic materials 
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).  Expert knowledge of Excel, formulas, macros, VBA coding and data analysis is preferred)
  • Ability to apply statistical methodology to establish process capability
  • Advanced problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with materials characterization and physical property testing
  • Familiarity with computer programming
